Helmet Policy

Waverley Blues has changed its helmet policy starting from the 2014 season. Previously the club had a compulsory helmet rule for all players in our U9 and U10 age groups. Following guidance from both the EFL and AFL on the benefits of the use of helmets in Australian Football games, the club at their 2014 AGM changed the policy to be :

  • That the use of helmets will no longer be mandatory in the U9 and U10 age groups.
  • The club will not supply helmets to any players

This will bring these age groups in line with all other age groups.

There have been suggestions that the league should consider this as a mandatory requirement for junior players. The matter continues to be monitored and researched by the AFL. They have recently provided an update of their position statement in regard to both helmets and mouthguards.

Based on the information that is currently available, it is not envisaged that the league will establish any mandatory requirements regarding the use of helmets in EFNL matches in the foreseeable future.

 HELMETS

There is no definitive scientific evidence that helmets prevent concussion or other brain injuries in Australian football.

There is some evidence that younger players who wear a helmet may change their playing style, and receive more head impacts as a result. Accordingly, helmets are not recommended for the prevention of concussion.

Helmets may have a role in the protection of players on return to play following specific injuries (e.g. face or skull fractures).
